Meet the wifes of Kent

Discover how these five women spend every monday morning meeting & counselling (that's how they call it, as they can talk about everything in their lives). Hear how they 'come out of the fog' after their demanding early baby years (it's the same everywhere).

I wondered what's typical for a wife of Kent. So I asked them after counselling when we sat in the big and light conservatory.

Here some important lessons for a Dutch girl:
The wifes of Kent live the 'good life'.
They are middle class women.
Half of them don't work.
Half of them work part-time as a teacher, doctor or artist.
They make banana cakes and dry apples above the stove.

They live in nice country houses.

They have apple trees all over the garden.
They pick up the apples in old baskets.

They make nice things of dried cranberries.

They have lunches.
They volunteer for Christmas fairs.
They are in touch with the seasons.
They are very spiritual.

They have husbands who are going to the Caribbean for tv work.
They have husbands who are famous magicians.
They have husbands who are performing for prince William tonight.
Really!
They have French husbands.
Their kids have to do the 'Kent-test'.
When they pass the test they can go to grammar school.
If they don't, it's a pity!
Rich parents give their children coaching to pass the test.
Some send them to private schools.
Their children are guarenteed to pass the test.
The not-so-rich can't do that.
So more of their children can't go to grammar.
And when you're not at grammar, don't worry, you can still go to uni.
But you don't belong to the 'upper'.
So the English class system is still there.

First I thought they where like the 'Gooische vrouwen' in Holland.
And maybe they are a bit. But there is a big difference.
The wifes of Kent don't wear posh designer clothes.
They only dress up for occasions.
They are not scarred to show their assets.
If you have it, flag it.
In their day to day lives they wear cosy socks and wooly jumpers.
They win prices like 'the green family of the year'.
They take off there shoes inside.
They are real country women.
Everything you read in Country Living is true.

  1. This is making me laugh. A very good observation at the end. However, some of us wear designer clothes, but not labelled! I love being a Kent Wife!

  2. This paints a lovely picture and being a Kent woman is nice, not quite as idyllic as it sounds, I am unfortunately minus the country house and famous husband! As for designer clothes, that is definitely a thing of the past!!!!!
